----General Character Information----
Personal History:
Sour, dour, little miss Liesl. Like her native German tongue, the girl grew up to be abrasive and off-putting. A natural loner, she was never taught to play well with others. She learned how to behave from her upbringing in an unloving household, where the most affection she was shown was a pat on the head before being told to run along.
Liesl spent more time with her various governesses (who could never abide the child for long) than with her parents; being recently orphaned has induced little grief from the girl. However, becoming the heiress to the Jacobs legacy has spurred countless troubles for her. Since her parents’ deaths in what was published to be a boating accident, she discovered they were the magnates of one of the most prominent factions in underground crime, akin to a magical German mafia, but never dubbed as such (as that is a much more muggle practise).
To expound more upon the matter, it operates among several different elite, pureblood magical families in Germany, a circle of old, wealthy lines that have always competed amongst each other for power under the guise of business matters. Where a typical muggle mafia circulates within one incestuous family, this operation involves a number of different names and factions with ties and feuds that go centuries back. To the parties immediately involved, the feuds are well-known, but otherwise the matters and trafficking of illegal activity are kept well under wraps.
Liesl was diverted expertly away from all these proceedings by her parents, helped sufficiently along by her talent for self-involvement (she has never cared for any person’s worries but her own). Her parents never entertained the idea of indulging her in the secrets of the exchange until she came of age, when she would be closer to an ability to take part. Their plans, of course, were interrupted by their untimely deaths. She was later tipped off that the ‘boat accident’ was, in fact, a murder. Having had no inkling of her parents’ business affairs previous to their deaths, Liesl was forced to recognise a world of truths that meant she could be the next in line for a hit. Is she really safe at Hogwarts, or are there assassins afoot?
Personality:
Liesl does not understand the meaning of friendship, and now with suspicion of her family’s relation to underground crime, even allies seem to pose an unnecessary risk. Her brunt, defensive, high-and-mighty nature is the result of being taught for sixteen years that she is superior to others and can have anything she wants—even if that means she must take it by force. She can be wily and manipulative if the situation calls for more than brutality, but most of the time she has an artless way about her callousness, leaving her open for rebuke. Trust is something you can hope to teach her, but you had better not hold your breath.
Strengths:
1.) Because of her provocative demeanor (and no, not in the alluring sense whatsoever), Liesl is an experienced duelist and loves a good fight. She’s been hit with a number of good hexes in her time, but like any self-sufficient girl she takes the opportunity to learn those spells for her next match while she nurses her wounds. If you’re ever in a duel with her, be prepared for something nasty and a bit twisted to come your way – no pink afros or pig’s tails from this Slytherin.
2.) One talent that not many will know about her is her love and affinity for animals, whether interacting with her raven, Writing Desk, spending time with her horse, or finding some other stray wild thing in need of attention. Her Andalusian bay, Achilles, is probably the one gift from her parents she has kept and actually loved in all these years. She trained with him back in Berlin and hopes to have him brought to Hogwarts now that no one inhabits her Berlin home because he is one companion she truly misses. Achilles is calm and content around his master, but others make him nervous and territorial. He must get his distrustful nature from Liesl. Writing Desk is also perniciously defensive and flighty, and inspects all newcomers with a beady, surmising gaze, ready to peck out eyes or innards if someone should disrespect his mistress. And despite how atrociously Liesl gets on with her fellow man, she responds almost like a gentle mother to her pets. They are more friends and confidants than creatures she considers her belongings. They know her secrets and her tics, and she knows theirs. She speaks to them naturally, openly—and one assumes she believes they speak back. (It’s really quite creepy and surprising to witness her behaving this way, wtf.)
3.) Perhaps in contrast to her personality, Liesl has a knack for healing spells and potions. Although it’s not inherent for her to care about the wellbeing of others, she takes healing magic very seriously and sometimes uses her free hours to assist Madame Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing. Liesl hopes to become a regular apprentice with her – although it’s understandable that most students lying ill in the Hospital Wing won’t be too comforted by the idea of Miss Jacobs’ help.
Weaknesses:
1.) Oh, where to begin. She’s quick to jump to conclusions, and often the wrong ones. Liesl is not a very good judge of character, mostly because she thinks everyone is a potential enemy. She needs to learn not to judge books by their covers.
2.) No means Yes. And by that I mean if Liesl is told she cannot have something, she only wants it more. Who dares stand in Miss Temper Tantrum’s way? The more strongly you forbid or prohibit, the more conniving and desperate she will become to get it. This usually ends up in feuding and trouble… and trips to the Hospital Wing for Liesl and her opponents.
3.) Anything requiring her to use her imagination (that isn’t related to dueling) is off. Liesl is not an optimist, not a dreamer. She’s a realist, even if that reality is slightly skewed in her favor. Come to think of it, it’s amazing someone like her is even magical. But in her world, magic is the reality.
4.) Holding grudges, even where unwarranted, is her specialty. She is frighteningly narrow-minded, and once she’s made up that mind, it’s final.
5.) Flying = NO. Liesl is a terror on a broom, and since she insists on being the best at everything, she simply excludes flying from the list. Hence, she writes off anything pertaining to flying as an absolute waste of time, especially Quidditch. A bunch of jocks and tomboys with sticks, what a joke!
6.) Swimming is also a big, fat NO THANKS. She has never taken lessons, therefore has never known how to swim, and now that her parents suffered death by drowning in a ‘boating accident,’ Liesl has an intense phobia of water. A close proximity to the Hogwarts Lake is permissible, but try to get her any nearer than the rocky shore and she’s certain to run for the hills. She will not admit to crying about it, however, and if you accuse her of that you’ll get a black eye, so help her Salazar!!!
7.) Immense self-doubt, for which she seriously overcompensates by being stodgy, sour, cruelly honest, scrappy and ready to fight, and attempting to intimidate when provoked (or when not provoked, she’s just not a pleasant person, really. Tut.) She’s really a Little Black Raincloud 24/7.
Fears: (Less chronic fears.)
1.) Briefly mentioned in her personality, she fears putting trust in any person other than herself. Liesl claims it is a weakness to do so, that a truly strong person relies only on his or herself to solve problems. But what she doesn’t admit is that it is one of her greatest fears, letting someone in to help her or guide her. The problem goes even deeper than she understands—it stems from a core of immense self-doubt. She thinks she trusts herself, but she has many doubts in her defense capabilities and instincts. And if she can’t trust herself, why should she trust anyone else? Especially if the only people in her life who were supposed to love her never did, and abandoned her?
Secrets/Hopes:(Does your character a secret from the past, a well-hidden piece of his/her personality, identity, or point of view, or even a secret wish/hope for the future no one yet knows about? You may specify if you want this information known by certain characters or only by the Moderators.)
1.) Her main secret that she now finds very difficult to keep is the fact that her parents were criminals. At first the police reports were inconclusive, and the caretaker of her family’s estate was the only one to inform her of the truth. But little by little the German newspapers are leaking rumours and more factual information about the murders and the story behind it. Liesl is at the least trying to hide the fact that she has become a ward of the state in Germany until she is of age, something she is highly embarrassed about.
Physical Description:
Her hair is black, sleek and straight, hanging to her shoulders, though she has been known to use a glamour to sport a short, pixie coif. Eyes are bottle green and piercing in sharpness, with 20/20 vision often narrowed in a glare. A fair complexion, suggesting a distaste for toiling in the sun – why would anyone of noble blood resort to such manual labor? She stands at medium height, about 5’6, and is rather lanky in the limbs. All hard lines and harsh angles, she’s hardly what the schoolboys would want pinned up in their dorm rooms. Perhaps if she smiled once in a while…
Body Model: Selma Blair
Special Attributes: None.
Wand:
Padauk wood – A powerful yet chaotic wood, Padauk is not at all recommended for those new to The Craft. The energy of this wood is constantly changing, randomly fluctuating. It would, however, be an amazing wood for healing magic if one could learn to harness the chaotic energy within. In the hands of the inexperienced, it would likely do more harm than good.
Core – Hair from the Mane of a Kelpie
Extremely Rigid
11 ¾ inches.
Broom: Noooooplzthxkbye.
OWL Scores:
Potions – O
Transfiguration – O
Charms – O
DADA – A
Astronomy – E
Divination – D (oh noes!)
Ancient Runes – A
Herbology – T (gasp!!)
Arithmancy – A
Alignment: Not a fan of any battles other than her own, Liesl is not publicly aligned with Voldemort, but may feign an interest if it will gain her the necessary means, contacts, and training for protection from her new enemies. Thus, she has no stated alliance, probably making her a target for speculation or for propositions to join either side.

#1
There came a sudden rush of cold air into the Slytherin Common Room as Liesl stepped in from the outer dungeons. The heavy doors shut behind her, cutting through the late afternoon silence with a hollow slam. Hollow… Liesl seemed not to hear the jarring noise. She simply stood stock still in the entryway, frozen as if poised for action. Her expression was vacant, empty, echoing that same hollowness. Sharp green eyes stared unblinking into the shadows of the familiar den, not seeing any of it. All the girl saw was a string of words scripted formally on parchment, repeating itself as if on a rotating belt. And the strange words of Headmistress McGonagall grew more foreign and abhorrent each time they echoed in her ears…
“…Nothing can compare to the loss of one’s parents, Miss Jacobs. You have my condolences and utmost sympathy…”
…Finally, Liesl looked down at the folded letter in her hand bemusedly, as though wondering how it got there. She had held it now for at least an hour, sitting in McGonagall’s office after she had delivered it to Liesl personally, before a painfully slow walk back to the dungeons.
She could admit no real anguish at the news. Their family shared no love. Her parents viewed her as a commodity, and to keep her out from underfoot and distracted from their activities they had bought her everything a growing young girl could desire. Achilles, her horse, with whom she trained and won countless trophies. Any number of dolls and playthings now lying broken and forgotten, neglected by the disinterested child. And always a warning, a vague promise, that one day she would understand and inherit a “wealth of an empire.” With it would come responsibilities she could not yet fathom, they had said.
Liesl had taken it as another of their empty promises about money and pomp. Something to occupy her less than vivid imagination and keep her from prying into their affairs. Not that she had ever expressed any interest in them. She kept her curiosity to herself and didn’t bother asking what they meant; she knew they wouldn’t answer.
Now she supposed she would find out what her future as the Jacobs heiress held. But she could have no idea of the dangers that lay ahead…
Liesl sat on the sofa holding the letter, staring at it with that same vacant expression.

“That’ll be five sickles, mi—”
But Liesl had already dropped a galleon’s worth on the bar and skulked away into the throbbing crowd. Dragon’s Breath singed down her throat, and further still; her rib cage felt inflamed with it. Her head swam with the sea of people around her. When they lurched, so did her stomach. But it was what she wanted. Even the most meaningless distraction would do. If she let herself focus, if she let herself think rationally even for a short time, she would be unable to deny it any longer.
She had gone insane.
“Out of my way, ungeziefer [ vermin ],” she muttered hastily as she pushed a tawdry old witch aside who blocked the door to the loo.
Once inside she locked and jammed the door behind her. Alone. No one else in the stalls. Slowly, she pivoted towards the cracked, stained mirror. Her eyes were the last to turn to the glass. She was afraid to look… but she had to know.
…Her scream could not be heard over the din of the nightly mob.
